SUMMARY:Insight on Travel Landscape & Astro Photography

Like the YPS Facebook page by clicking here:\n2. Click on https://facebook.com/ypsbengaluru/live/ on 27 Sep 2020 at 5.30pm IST.\nYouTube:\n1. Subscribe to YPS YouTube channel by clicking here\n2. Click on https://youtube.com/ypsbengaluru/live/ on 27 Sep 2020 at 5.30pm IST.\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\nMr. Umesh Gogna \n\n \nMr Gogna comes from a family of jewelers.  After completing his post graduation\, he started helping his father in their family business while also working on his Ph.D. thesis on ancient Indian jewelry. He needed good quality photographs of jewelry for his thesis. Good images were difficult to come by in those days and he could not afford to hire a professional photographer.  In order to get good images for his thesis\, he decided to buy a camera and try photographing the jewelry himself.  He bought a second hand Pentax camera kit\, thus starting his journey as a photographer. \nAfter some disappointments\, and a lot of hard work\, he was able to get good images for his thesis. He also discovered that he liked photography and started spending more and more time with his camera. He upgraded his camera kit\, brought studio lights and even set up a small studio in his house.  Soon people started asking him to photograph their jewelry and he was happy to oblige.  He also loved to travel to new destinations with his camera and take photographs.  \nWhen he realized that he was devoting more time to photography than to family business\, he decided to turn professional and devote all his time to photography.  It was a difficult decision as he was essentially leaving a secure business for the uncharted waters of professional photography\, but now after so many years he is glad that he made that choice. Photography has always been the main passion of his life and he feels especially lucky and blessed to be able to devote all his time to it.  \nMost of his professional work is in the field of handicraft and jewelry\, stone and the hospitality industry. Apart from his professional work he also does a lot of travel and nature photography. Over the years he has spent a lot of time documenting the cultural\, architectural and natural heritage of Rajasthan and the Himalayas. The wilderness\, the open spaces of the desert and the mountains attract and inspire him. His work has been published in several books on these subjects.  \nHe learned photography the hard way\, through experimentation\, trial and error\, as there were no good institutes or teachers/mentors in Jaipur. After spending many years as a professional photographer\, he felt that he should give back something to the profession of photography. One area where he felt he could contribute was by educating aspiring photographers about the science and art of photography.  \n He started helping young photographers by conducting workshops and also by personally mentoring them. It started as a small effort initially\, but over the years\, he has conducted more than 150 workshops. These workshops are on photography related subjects like Portraiture\, Photographing Jewelry\, Fashion Photography\, Digital Photography\, Digital Post Production amongst others. He also gives lectures in universities and colleges and mentors enthusiasts in many photography clubs.  \nDuring the early days of his career he used to shoot on film. He used a 35mm camera kit\, a 645 camera kit and a 4×5 camera kit. He likes to stay at the cutting edge of technology and by nature\, an early adopter of technology.  He was one of the first to shift to digital cameras because he could see the immense advantages offered by them.  \nHe shoots in the studio as well as in the field and therefore  needs a very flexible and responsive system. He is also very particular about the quality of the images he creates. For him only the best will do.  \nInitially he was a bit apprehensive about using a mirrorless camera\, but  soon realized the design advantages that a mirrorless system offers over a traditional DSLR and shifted to a mirrorless system. The Sony A7RM2\, with 42.4 megapixels is his camera of choice. The A7RM2 gives  great performance with matchless image quality in a small\, well designed\, package. With its 399 focusing points with on-sensor phase detection autofocus system\, the A7RM2 focuses almost instantly\, even in very low light conditions. The BSI sensor gives industry leading high ISO performance\, making photographs possible even in very low light conditions. The BSI sensor also ensures that the images have industry leading dynamic range. He also has the Sony A7S. He likes to use it for time lapse and night astrophotography because of its industry leading high ISO performance.  \nA sensor is only as good as the lenses that it is coupled with. Sony and Zeiss offer a world beating range of lenses. In addition\, adapters are available for almost all makes of lenses. His lens kit consists of the FE 16-35 f4.0\, FE 35 f1.4\, FE 24-70mm f4.0\, FE 70-200mm f4.0 G and the FE90mm f2.8 Micro.  \nProfessional journey\nUmesh Gogna started his journey as a freelance photographer in 1998. He has photographed many commercial & tourism assignments for his clients and Government departments. Travel\, landscape & nature photography are his foremost passions.  \nHe has conducted more than 250 workshops on photography. Having conducted workshops for Canon India as a mentor for seven years (2008-2014)\, Mr. Gogna is currently a brand ambassador and mentor for Sony Alpha. Nowadays\, his photography expeditions and master classes are very popular. \nHe has spent a lot of time in documenting the cultural & architectural heritage of Rajasthan and the Himalayas. His work on these subjects has been published in several books. His works on Rajasthan’s royalty\, fairs\, festivals & colors are framed in the coffee table books of Pali\, Jalore & Jhalawar. \n Several other books are lined up to be published. \nAwards: \n\nFounder Member and Mentor / Jury at Camarena Academy (FB)\nHonored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Jaipur Photographer’s Club\nHonored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for contributing to education in photography by Jodhana Photojournalist Society\nHonoured by Governor of Rajasthan (Margaret Alva) for contributing to education in photography\nPart of Jury for a number of photographer’s clubs\, colleges and schools.\nConducted over 250 photography workshops PAN-India\n\nGuest Faculty in Allahabad University (2008 to 2019)\, Central University of Bihar\, BITS Pilani Photography Club and more. \n\n-YPS Executive Committee

It is a form of art that transforms an ordinary moment into an extraordinary one. Photography to me is an effort to freeze an incredible moment that I see with my naked eye. Nature’s play of light stuns us with some picturesque moments that you want to enjoy forever.  \nGoing with the Chinese proverb “A picture is worth thousand words” I use my photographs as a means of communication. The language of Photography can depict a gamut of human emotions\, the pains\, struggles\, joys and beauty. \nI not only freeze my vision but also my emotion in my pictures. Every time I go through my pictures I feel the same joy and excitement that I experienced while capturing it. Photography helps me to share my joy and happiness with the rest of the world. \nI would like to share\, what my master used to say “LOOK FOR PROPER LIGHT\, SEARCH FOR THE SUBJECT\, PICTURE WILL BE YOURS”. \nPhotography can record the marvellous moments of light and shadow and freeze the emotional exchange between people and nature. \n  \n-YPS Executive Committee

SUMMARY:From Visible Spectrum To Invisible Spectrum
DESCRIPTION:YPS Meet Live | August 16\, Sun | 5:30 PM | YPS Facebook page\nThe most important aspect for a photographer is good light!  We see colours due to the presence of light. And when we say light\, in terms of photography\, we are mostly referring to ‘White light’ that is sunlight which consists of seven colours\, in short called VIBGYOR. In order to record all colours truly\, most types of photography is done using White Light\, even when we use studio lights. During the film era\, commonly used colour films had a marking ‘Daylight Type’ which referred to the white light as mentioned. But not many photographers however know that the band of white light that human eyes see is actually a very small portion of spectrum. It is this small range that we can see (from 400 nm to 700 nm approx.) and it is called VISIBLE SPECTRUM\, rest is invisible to us. The band of INVISIBLE SPECTRUM extends considerably on both sides of the VISIBLE SPECTRUM. IR (Infrared) band is a similar portion that cannot be seen through naked human eyes but with special photographic material\, it can be recorded. It produces very interesting photos both in black & white and colour. There are a lot of technicalities involved in IR Photography. \nThe presentation will start with images from VISIBLE SPECTRUM gradually progressing from one colour to another and will proceed to images captured using IR Spectrum to produce very different looking Black & White pictures. IR Spectrum photography was done by hardly 4-5 people in India during the 1990s \n \nTo join the session\n\nFollow YPS Facebook page by clicking here\,  so that you get notified when the live session starts.\nClick on https://facebook.com/ypsbengaluru/live @ 5.30pm on Sunday 16 August\, 2020.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Bhupesh C Little\nPhD\, Post Doc. SUMMARY:Wildscapes
DESCRIPTION:YPS Meet Live | July 19\, Sun | 5:30 PM | YPS Facebook page\n\nOur next YPS meet is by Mr. Praveen Mohandas \nAs the title suggests\, this is a presentation with a difference!\nMr. Praveen Mohandas presents “Wildlife in Landscape” bridging between wildlife and landscape images of wilderness and all on Monochrome!\nHe says “Colour photography to me is very representational if done in the regular way. My nature photography is not about records of my encounters. Many a times it’s an emotional response to the situation I am in. I like to get focused on to the subtitles of nature which otherwise is ignored . Black and white helps me to bring the initial layer of abstraction in the work. SUMMARY:Street Stories
DESCRIPTION:YPS Meet Live | July 12\, Sun | 5:30 PM | YPS Facebook page\n\nOur next YPS meet is by Mr Thejas K Rajaram who will turn ‘Story-teller’ for us to ‘see’ street stories unfold from USA. \nThejas loves life on the street. He is often found wandering in unknown streets\, talking to strangers and taking street photographs. \nGood street photographs fill us with emotions or give us insight.  Good street photographs go beyond light\, shapes\, and faces.  They use these tools to tell great stories of life.  Sometimes\, they ask questions.  Questions that may not have answers.  But questions that open up your perspectives\, making the need for an answer moot.  Street photographs are magical mirrors of life. \nAs humans\, when we were little\, we were entranced by mythological stories by grandmothers with white hair\, slightly drooping chin with a kind face\, a worn out saree patting us lovingly with their weathered palms.  The story seeking heart still remains with us when we are adults.  We seek to understand the world around us using patterns and stories. \n\n \nTo join the session\n\nFollow YPS Facebook page by clicking here\,  so that you get notified when the live session starts.\nClick on https://facebook.com/ypsbengaluru/live @ 5.30pm on Sunday 21 July\, 2020.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nMr. Thejas K R is one of our members who has been telling stories through photographs since a little more than a decade.  He lives in Houston\, Texas\, USA and manages Operational Technology projects for Alizent\, a part of Air Liquide – a world leader in Industrial & Medical gases.  He grew up in Bengaluru\, has a degree in Computer Science Engineering and an MBA Finance from Rice University\, Houston. \nThejas primarily shoots landscapes\, portraits\, street scenes and events.  Also\, he dabbles in Digital Creativity subjects.  Thejas has participated in numerous Salons and photo contests around the world.  He has an AFIAP distinction in photography. \nThejas has served on the boards of Houston Photographic Society and Houston Camera Club.  He is a life member of YPS. \n-YPS Executive Committee

SUMMARY:Exotic Ecuador - Through a Doctor's Lens
DESCRIPTION:YPS Meet Live | June 14\, Sun | 5:30 PM | YPS Facebook page\nWith over 1500 species of birds\, Ecuador offers more bird diversity in less space than any other country in the world.\nOur next YPS meet is by Dr. Pradeep Rao who will share his experiences of travel to Ecuador & Galapagos. The presentation will take you through it’s habitat & bird life. \nAll birders are aware that Bird Diversity varies according to the Latitude. Therefore Arctic region has less resident birds\, temperate region has more and tropical belt has the most. \n \nHalfway between US and the equator is  tiny Costa Rica\, which has over 850 species — more species than in the entire United States. Ecuador\, sitting right on the equator\, is the culmination of this trend. \nWith over 1500 species of birds\, Ecuador offers more bird diversity in less space than any other country in the world. \nGeographic good fortune has blessed Ecuador with a wide variety of faunal zones\, including some of the richest on this planet\, each with its characteristic birds. Ecuador’s Amazonian faunal zone alone has more than 600 species of birds\, and several other Ecuadorian zones are nearly as rich. \nEcuador’s small size (equal to the U.S. state of Colorado) and well-developed transportation system means that this diversity can be easily accessed and experienced even by those with limited time and money. \nGalapagos Islands\, 1000 kms off the Ecuadorian West Coast has always been interesting for its very peculiar flora and fauna\, apart from being well known to its association with Charles Darwin. Darwin’s visit to the Galapagos Islands\, had a resounding impact on the formation of his THEORY OF NATURAL SELECTION. \nThis Sunday\, let’s fly high and see the exotic birds thru a doctor’s lens! \nTo join the session\n\nFollow YPS Facebook page by clicking here\,  so that you get notified when the live session starts.\nClick on https://facebook.com/ypsbengaluru/live @ 5.30pm on Sunday 14 June\, 2020.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nDr. Pradeep Rao\, Consultant Pathologist\, has been in Laboratory Medicine for over 30 years. His specialization is in Genetics and Pre Natal Diagnosis\, ie.\, Investigating to detect various diseases when the baby is inside the womb – during pregnancy. \n\n\n\nHe got back to photography since 2016\, after giving it a 30 year break\, as he got caught in the regular “Rat Race” called “ Life”. He was an active member of YPS around 1984 – times of Gul Rajani\, E Hanumantha Rao\, Dr Hari Narayan\, N Gopinath\, Allama Prabhu Sr…etc. \nHis interest is mainly Bird Photography with a little bit of Wildlife thrown in. He is an avid traveller\, having visited over 40 countries for tourism and bird photography.\nDr Rao says he’s sharing his experiences & photographs with the hope of getting comments of all experts and looks forward to some new learnings \n-YPS Executive Committee
