A Great Loss for Photographers

YPS News | Feb 8, 2017

No one realized that February 8, 2017 will be a dark day in the history of Photography in Bengaluru. Today we lost one of the purest souls, a great mentor and a leading light in the field of photography in Bengaluru. Shri Thanjavur Nateshacharya Ayyam Perumal, popularly known as TNA Perumal, the Doyen of Wildlife Photography, breathed his last at 4:20 AM, February 8, 2017.

He had remained the icon of Wildlife Photography and a mentor and guru for many photographers. He never hesitated to provide support for spreading the cause of photography. A Honorary member of YPS, he supported all the programs of YPS and attended whenever we requested him. He flagged off the YPS Programs for 2016-17 in May 2016 and also launched the YPS Website.

In October 2016 YPS celebrated Wildlife Week and felicitated 4 wildlife photographers including Mr. TNA Perumal. Despite his very poor health, he made it a point to attend the function and speak to the YPS Members.

Tributes to Shri. T N A Perumal

“It is a great loss to photographic world.” – Satish, YPS President

“Humility far beyond his achievements: Shri. Perumal had visited every one of our Photo Exhibitions for Cause held at HCG and Chitrakala Parishath and spent time with us giving encouragement and friendly feedback. Every time we visited him at his home, he spent quality time with us to discuss photography, reviewed our pictures and provided suggestions. We have lost a great supporter and will miss a great person that he was.” – Murali Santhanam, Member,  Vismaya for Cause, YPS Member No: LM-193

“Shri TNA Perumal was an icon in the world of nature photography. His sad demise is a great loss to our country. He leaves behind some of the most remarkable images of Indian wildlife. Having influenced a generation of wildlife photographers, he will  be remembered for his immense contribution to conservation and for propagating the art of ethical nature photography. For me, as one who lived in his neighbourhood in Bengaluru and having interacted with him since 1989, he leaves behind memories of moments spent with a simple but extraordinary human being. He was one of the first photographic personalities to support and present in Shutterbugs – Government College of Pharmacy, Bengaluru in 1991. He was also an ardent supporter of Askary Awards having distributed the awards on several occasions. He was one of Karnataka’s ‘Navrathna’ in Photographic Art. Shri TNA Perumal will always influence me most for his immense humility and simplicity. RIP Shri TNA Perumal.” – Mr. Mohammed Arfan Asif, YPS Honorary Member, Mentor, Shutterbugs Creative Forum, Dubai.

“I was inspired and influenced by Shri T.N.A Perumal’s  B/W images published long back in ‘Tushara ‘ Kannada monthly which I’ve retained now also in my collection. Really we’ve lost a great photographer. Let the great soul of ‘Dronacharya in photography field’ rest in peace.” – Nagendra Muthmurdu, AFIAP, Hobby Photographer, Freelance writer, Member of YPS (LM-175) and SPS Sagar

“Sad to hear this news. Yes indeed an excellent wildlife photographer & an encyclopedia on birds & insects. He was also an expert in B/W printing. His color transparency developing was also exceptional. A humble person, gentleman whom I have come across in YPS circle. Truly miss him. May his soul rest in peace.” – Manu N (LM-100), Photographer / Cinematographer / Producer / Director  & Actor, Manu Entertainment Network.
