Architecture Photography – Indian Heritage Monuments

March 15 @ 5:30 am 7:30 pm UTC+5.5

Presentation by:
Mr Goutham Ramesh

Architectural photography of Indian heritage monuments is more than just capturing structures—it is about preserving history, culture and artistry through a lens. This presentation delves into the thought process behind photographing monuments, focusing on research, composition, and storytelling. It explores how light influences the mood and details of an image, how different perspectives—from grand vistas to intricate carvings—offer varied narratives, and how tools like tilt-shift lenses help maintain architectural integrity. Through examples and techniques, the session will illustrate how to approach heritage photography with creativity and precision ensuring every image resonates with the monument’s essence and timeless beauty

About Goutham Ramesh

Goutham Ramesh is a multifaceted individual with a deep passion for photography, technology, and cultural heritage. A skilled photographer, Goutham specializes in capturing the essence of historical monuments, natural landscapes, and wildlife. His favorite equipment includes the Nikon Zf , Nikon Zfc, Nikon D750, and lenses like the Nikon 24mm PCE tilt-shift, 200-500mm VR, and Laowa 100mm. His photography journeys have taken him to iconic locations like Hampi, Lepakshi, Darasuram, and Thanjavur, where he often seeks unique perspectives, like reflections in rain puddles or intricate carvings on temple walls.

Goutham’s talent has earned him numerous accolades, including the PSA Gold Medal (Bosnia), GPU Gold Medal (Greece), and GIP Gold Medal (Germany). His photographs have been accepted for exhibitions in many countries, showcasing his ability to capture moments that transcend cultural boundaries.

Goutham is particularly drawn to India’s rich cultural heritage and classical art forms like Bharatanatyam. His work often includes detailed descriptions and stories of sculptures, temples, and traditional architecture. Notable captures include the Brihadeeswara Temple under dramatic lighting, the intricate carvings of Hosaholalu, and wildlife moments like blackbucks in their natural habitat.

He credits much of his growth as a photographer to the mentorship of talented individuals like  V Nagraj, who inspired him with his connection to the subject in macro photography, and Satish H, whose expertise in composition and storytelling shaped Goutham’s artistic vision. He also values the guidance of Late Murali Santhanam, whose insights into light and intricate details have deeply influenced Goutham’s style.

Professionally, Goutham is the Director of Engineering at an IT company, where he drives innovations in AI and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC).

He is also an advocate for hobby photographers, challenging policies that limit their ability to document India’s heritage and showcasing the beauty of the country’s monuments through his lens. Inspired by his mentors and a thirst for discovery, Goutham continually strives to master macro photography and document the intricate details of India’s architectural and natural wonders.

Goutham’s love for travel and discovery is evident in his road trips to places like Hampi, Lepakshi, and Tamil Nadu’s temple towns, where he combines his skills in photography with his deep appreciation for history and culture.
