Chief Guest:
Dr. Shivakumar Begar
Renowned Yakshagana Artist
Dr. Shivakumar Begar is a veteran Yakshagana artist. For the past three decades, he has been winning the hearts of the public through his exemplary stage performance. He has performed over 10,000 shows throughout India and has trained thousands of students for the past 18 years in the art of Yakshagana through his Gaana Sourabha Yakshagana School in Bengaluru. He is among the few who has strived to preserve and propagate this centuries old art form. He has received Nadaprabhu Kempegowda award, Karavali Utsava award, Basavaratna award, Yakshashree and Honorary doctorate for his service in Yakshagana.
Dr. Shivakumar was born on 1st June, 1969, and acquired mastery over Yakshagana under the guidance of Gnanpeetha awardee Dr. Shivarama Karantha, Shri. Neelavara Ramakrishnaiah and Shri. Heranjalu Venkataramana. He excels in Tenkuthittu and Badaguthittu style of Yakshagana. He is well known for portrayal of female character roles like Seetha, Mohini, Chitrangada, Kunti etc.
When he was a child, he performed the role of Manmatha in the play Rathi Kalyana, staged in Begar. Greatly influenced by this performance, he joined the Yakshagana learning center in Udupi. Dr. Shivakumar was one among the 10 students who got selected by Kota Shivarama Karantha at the Udupi Yakshagana center in 1982. He had then just completed his primary education. After the 10 months course, he joined Mulki troupe and performed Balagopala dance. As he was a very young boy, he found it difficult to adjust to the troupe environment. So he started working at a fruit stall. But after a few months, the passion for the art form persuaded him to re-start his career and continued to perform at many plays across the country.
He served as manager for a decade from 1985 to 1995 at Amrutheshwara Pravasi Yakshagana Mandali. He then moved to Bengaluru and set up his own organization – Gaana Sourabha Yakshagana School and started training students in Yakshagana, along with the musical instruments like chande and maddale. He also trains students in bhagavathike (singing).
