My Camera. My Companion.
February 18, 2017 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm UTC+5.5
YPS Meet | Feb 18 | 6:30 PM | State Youth Centre
Continuing with the series of Women Photographers, YPS is pleased to bring you a slideshow and talk by Ms. Hema Narayanan, Photojournalist & Writer. Ms. Hema Narayanan’s passion for photography is evident when we see her refer to her camera as her “Companion” than as a lifeless piece of equipment. With her great “Companion”, her Camera, Ms. Hema has chronicled compelling stories from across the world. In her talk, Ms. Hema will take us through ‘her journey’, giving a peek into how her passion for Pixels and Words, made her a Photojournalist and a Writer, how she experimented with different genres of Photography, from Travel, Street, Landscape, People, Interiors to Culture, Wildlife, Photojournalism and, of late, Astro Photography. She will share her experiences and learnings on this path and also the ‘Transformations’ in the field of Photography.
After earning a Master’s Degree in engineering, Ms. Hema Narayanan worked in the IT and software development for many years. Often traveling for work, she began to pack a ”camera” on her professional journeys, keeping a personal photo documentation of the places she was going. Soon realising her underlying passion for camerawork (pixels) and travelogues (words), she made a New Year’s resolution in 2009 to give up her IT career in pursuit of her true photojournalistic and writing passion. She also finished as a graduate from New York Institute of Photography.
Today, Ms. Hema Narayanan is well-known as a Photojournalist whose works and words are frequently published in renowned newspapers, portals and magazines, including National Geographic Traveler India, Discover India, The Hindu and Deccan Herald. Her works are also licensed with GETTY Images and Shutterstock. As a professional Photographer, she dons many roles, one of them being an Entrepreneur and Founder, of the company WIDER ANGLES. She is also a ’Photography Mentor’ conducting photo workshops and walks in the city. Donning the role of a ’Photography Expedition Leader’she also leads aspiring photographers from India and abroad through many of her “Experience INDIA” Photo Journeys. As a professional photographer, she undertakes Commercial Photography, Philanthropic work and extensive Travel Writing.
